Alcoholism can cause low levels of electrolytes such as Magnesium and Potassium. Low levels of magnesium can be attributed to cases of hiccups, but is not always the single cause. In hiccups the diaphram is actually having spasm. To be certain what is causing the hiccups you should see a dr and have some basic blood tests done. I would not try to medicate him yourself without seeking the advice of a dr. Seeing the dr is also a good avenue to explore if you or your husband wants to seek help for the alcohol problem . Good Luck

The Guinness World Record for the longest continuous bout of hiccups (1922–1990) goes to Charles Osborne (1894–1991) from Anthon, Iowa. The hiccups started in 1922 at a rate of 40 times per minute, slowing to 20 and eventually stopping in February 1990 – a total of 68 years.

Prolonged bouts of the hiccups should be addressed by a physician as they could be a sign of other problems. Hiccups are generally caused when the diaphragm muscles are out of synch with your breathing, but there are other medical conditions that can cause prolonged bouts.
