I have heard that, like Australia, some of the first Americans came to these shores as convicts. Does anyone know what year this started.

Started in the mid-1600s, with Scots prisoners taken in battle. Altogether about 50,000 English convicts were exported to nine American settlements before the Revolution forced them to look elsewhere.

This would have been during the 17th century, probably the second half. After the american revolution they had to be sent to Australia

most of the 13 colonies were settled by adventurers, farmers, visionaries, religious fanatics ( my Puritan ancestors in New England)....with the exception of Georgia...most of the initial 'settlers' from, say, 1650 to 1750 were convicts sentence to 'transportation'..look up a history of Georgia's early years...
