The requirements to develop life per SE are very exact. All the components must be there in place and time. The universe is vast and we don't know whats out there but much of it including aliens and such is speculation. Think about this: our solar system is small, earth being the only planet to harbor life. Our galaxy, the milky way has been observed completely, with hundreds of planets and billions of stars, without a single indication of life that resemble us. The milky way is an extensive place. It is odd to say we are alone in the universe as we dont really know, but what are the chances of encountering civilizations like ours? Even if there were to exist a planet similar to earth, everything comes and goes in evolution and species become extinct also.

The universe is so big humans really can't get a grip on it's sheer bigness and with all those possible worlds out there there simply must be some other life forms. To believe otherwise is hugely egocentric of us.

On a clear night ther is more stars visible to the naked eye than there are grains of sand on all of the beaches on Earth combined. I just find it hard to fathom that this is it.

Probability suggests that we can not be.
And our definition of life might not be the same as another beings, so there may be life and we just don't recognize it
