How smooth does the engine idle? If it runs rough at idle, it could a vacuum leak. It could be caused by bad spark plugs, lack of sufficient fuel pressure (due to clooged fuel filter, bad fuel pump etc.). Without looking at it, it's hard to say. There are too many possibilities to give you a definite answer. Sorry. Hope this helps.

The other answers are all on the mark but it could also be as simple as a bad fuel filter or water in the gas, wich could happen anywhere you buy gas.
