Virtual memory is memory on disk. It's also known as swap, in some operating systems. Typically there's a way to increase it at the operating system level, although the maximum amount that can be used is a function of the cpu design.
In unix, you need to increase the swap space. There are programs like makeswap and swapon that help you do this.
In windows you go into control panel, and run the system program. The advanced tab, performance settings, advanced tab -- you'll see Virtual memory. You can adjust the size of the virtual memory file there.

To increase it: Right click on "My Computer" > Advanced > "Setup" under performance > Advanced > "Change" under Virtual memory > Change the values to 1.5 to 3 times the amount of RAM you have.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/ this site runs tests and makes suggestions on how to improve the performance. It gives step by step instructions on anything that needs to be tweaked like virtual memory.I would rather buy more memory because when you use virtual memory that is on the hard drive it is a million times slower than regular memory.(not sure about the speed but I know it's up there.)

Your virtual memory settings are a delicate matter and needs to be configured correctly. There is a high setting and a low setting. The high should never be more than twice the value of the low. So if you raise either keep in mind the high should never be more or less than double the low. "PEACE"
