a + 5 = 5a

So if you minus "a" on both sides:
a - a + 5 = 5a - a

Then you simplify it:
a - a = 0
Therefore 0 + 5 = 5a - a
5 = 4a

In other words:
4a = 5
a = 5 divided by 4
a = 1.25

Take ia to the right. Then,
5 = (5 - i).a,
i.e., a = 5/(5-i) Multiplying the numerator and the denominator by (5 + i),
a = 5(5 + i)/26

a+5 = 5a
subtract a from both sides
5 = 4a
divide both sides by 4
5/4 = a

2006-10-09 16:28:23 · answer #8 · answered by PJ 3 · 0 0

when you add and subtract stuff to both sides, the equation stays equal.
like a=a
a+3=a+3, right?
this also applies to division and multiplication
so you subtract a from both sides, getting 5 = 4a
then you divide by 4 on both sides, getting 1.25 =a
