You really hit on a winner of a question.
I always had the same question in mind years ago and often wondered what I would or should tell a person about poor body or breath conditions.
I found that politely asking them if they were aware of the foul smell they were producing. Some were obnoxious in answering but most are aware of their problem and apologized for it.
I have a son who falls into this situation with bad foot odor. He changes socks 3 to 4 times a day uses foot powers and anything else suggested to him but still has the problem.
Being allergic to some of the perfumes women wear, I find it rather repulsive when they get mad when you tell them.... in your words... you stink.
I still think the best method is to approach the person politely.

HAHA, this reminds me of the time me and my BF got our concert tickets paid for by another friend in exchange for taking him along because he didn't have a car to get there. The trip was 124 miles on the interstate to the concert. It was one of the hottest summer days that summer....and you know what heat does to the body! Our friend truly stank, we almost died from the smell!
Worst part was, if we turned on the air conditioner, the truck would overheat and we wouldn't make it to the concert. We didn't tell him how awful he smelled. Rolling down the highway at 85mph with the windows down was SO much fun, yeah sure! It was hot and stinky, god!

Yes I have. My husband has a friend who only bathes once a week. One time I came home and there was an awful smell. My husband and his friend were sitting in the living room, I asked my husband what stank. He looked at his friend. I told him "Dude, you need to leave because your stinking up my house. You are more than welcome to come back after you bath." He left but it was awhile before he returned.

yeah, there was this guy who liked me when i was in high school. we also rode the school bus together, and when he sits next to me or just a few inches away, i could smell this some kinda sour-ish-sweat from him that never seemed to go away even if just took a bath. i say whatever i want but i didn't say anything at all to him coz i was afraid he'd cry. yes, he cries THAT easily. :-) in time we just became good friends and that was the time i told him that he sweats too much, and would he please take a bath or bring extra shirts. heheh. :-)

Yes,a co-worker smelled really bad and I gagged. It was a reaction I wasn't counting on and kind of surprised me because that would be considered rude. The co-worker never even noticed and still smells.I don't say anything but other do to no avail.

I don't blame you one bit. I too, am very outspoken, and I will tell it like it is. I will try to be polite about it, but I will make sure that my point gets accross.
There is no excuse for not bathing. I know a couple of people like that, and I won't let them in my house because of it.
That is so gross!

There was this girl I went to high school with and she not only stank, but you could see arm pit stains too. I didn't tell her but they made fun of her and called her BO.

i just went to see Spamalot..the broadway play and found myself sitting next to a man that smelled as though he had been drunk for 3 days. no amount of showering can wash the stench of a three day drunk. i ignored it and tried to enjoy the show, which was fantastic, but was lessened by the enduring stench of the man (who also acted as though he were at a Grateful Dead concert, whooping and hollering, releasing more foul stench upon the neighboring viewers)
as i was driving home i felt as though the smell had attached itself to me. i showered as soon as i got home.
