I learned somewhere in my lifetime, probably school, that you can always get pregnant but the risk runs fairly lower when you are on your period. A friend of mine is saying that my thought is wrong. She says that you are the most fertile when you are on your period. Anyone know to truth? It there is a site or source to your answer please post it. I am concerned now because I am the "sex expert" in our group. If I am wrong, I need to let my friends and girls know. Thanks

What is menstruation?

For most of a women's life the egg cell that is released approximately once each month will not become fertilized, so the lining that develops each month for the possibility of a fertilized egg cell won't be needed. Over a period of days the blood vessels shrink and the uterus will shed the unneeded lining, which is made of a small amount of blood and tissue. The lining flows down the uterus through the cervix into the vagina and out of the body. This is called menstruation or the menstrual period. The amount of blood being lost during menstruation is relatively small. Only about two to four ounces over a three to eight day period slowly flow from the vagina. A women has approximately 120 ounces of blood in her body that is constantly being replenished. Some girls and women may experience discomfort during their period. Sometimes this discomfort may be called cramps. There are ways to deal with the discomfort that may accompany a period.

Having a period is completely natural and healthy. Menstruation is an important part of the menstrual cycle.

What is ovulation?

Ovulation is the release of an egg cell from one of the ovaries. This event occurs approximately once a month near the midpoint of a women's menstrual cycle. Upon release, the egg travels into the fallopian tube and then begins a four to five day journey to the uterus. The fallopian tube is only about five inches long and very narrow, so this is a slow journey. The egg cell moves about one inch per day. The movement of the egg cell is caused by two factors. First, the tiny muscles that surround the fallopian tube gently squeeze the egg cell pushing it along slowly. Second, are the millions of cilia (microscopic hairs) inside of the fallopian tube that gently sweep the egg toward the uterus.

Your friend is wrong. You can only get pregnant during ovulation, which is USUALLY 14 days after the start of your period. The reason it can be at any time, is ovulation can occur a few days later or sooner, and sperm have a lifespan of 3-5 days. When it comes to conceptions and pregnnacy, there are very few rules written in stone!

As said be other you can only get pregnant during ovulation which is usually between a few days to two weeks after your period. For me it's about a week. Some people can ovulate during their period, though it is unusual. Signs of ovulations include decrease in basel bodt remperature (right after ovulation) increase in think strechy cervical mucus, and feeling more horny than usual (which is subjective of course but related to hormones.) Even though you can only get pregnant then, which is only a 24 hour period, you can get pregnant from having sex before thne because sperm can live in the vagina for a few days.

Dogs are most fertile when they're on their period, humans are most fertile about 14 days AFTER the start of your period (for a regular 28 day cycle).
You're right:).

You are most fertile about two weeks after the start of your period, not during your period

from what i understand is uncommon but not impossible to get pregnant during your period...i think you are right not your friend. fertile means ovulating when you have your period you have already ovulated so unless you have a little mess up and let out another egg or something you cant get pregnant thats why its uncommon

The period is the wrong end of the cycle for peak fertility. However, you know what they call a couple who rely on the rhythm method...

A: Mommy and Daddy.
