This lead to the Civil War years later. Northern colonies tended to have more industrial and commercial areas. The South tended to be more Agrarian. The North-Western frontier tended to have more forested hard to reach areas with smaller farms. By the time of the Unfortunate War Between the States, the industrial age had hit, and the differences between North and South were more pronounced. Also many people do not realize it but the Civil War with the large manufacturing of weapons was the real predecessor to America's gun culture. The North had large population/ industrial centers while the South tended to be less industrialized, less immigration, larger farms, and of course slavery. The culture of the South also created a more old-style European Gentleman class. They tended to be leaders in the military. At the start of the War, most of West Point was Southerners. LSU and Texas A&M also used to produce a large number of officers. Also, remember that Washington considered himself a Virginian. These differences also resulted in a better transport system developing in the North and I believe larger and more port cities (NY Boston etc.) vs. Charlotte. Florida started as Spianish, and Louisiana (New Orleans) came during the T. Jefferson presidency.
