Ok. It doesn't hurt.
GO TO A TATTOO PARLOR! There is NO WAY anyone could properly sterilize a gun (what they use at Claire's). Tattoo parlors use autoclaves which completely sterilizes their tools. Plus you'll get a highly skilled and trained perfessional who knows how to do a whole lot more than click a gun. The needles that are used for piercing in tattoo places are much much sharper than any needles you have or the piercing studs at Claire's. They might hurt more, but it's a less chance of weird healing, closing, rejection, etc. Go to a parlor. Please. Do it for your ears.

NO body piercer would EVER recommend using a gun for any part of the anatomy including the ear lobe. Second, a professional piercer knows there is no plastic anything around the needle (nor would they call it a "pin")

The facts about guns:
They cannot be sterilized...period. The only way to sterilize is in an autoclave which uses pressure, high heat and steam which would melt a gun. The only way places like Claire's and such clean their guns is with an alcohol wipe.
When a gun is used, it rams a sharpened earring through your ear. It's somewhat sharpened, but not that sharp. Due to this ad the speed that it uses, there is a tiny amount of spatter where it emerges from the back of the earlobe...blood, fluids, whatever may be in the blood....you get the idea. There are too many small places on a piercing gun which an alcohol wipe cannot reach to clean, and since it doesn't sterilize, there can be potential contaminants on that gun from piercing to piercing, and so on.
Also, because the piercing stud is not that sharp, it does more damage to the skin cells as it plows through the ear. The torn tissue heals more poorly with more scar tissue than if a needle is used. The needle is razor sharp so it makes a clean puncture through the skin...sharper hurts less, too. It's so sharp, in fact, that a single piercing is enough to dull it noticeably.

Bottom line...for certainty of your health, your piercing, your healing, and the pain factor, have it done with a needle by a professional. Almost as important, never EVER listen to a person's advice that starts with "I heard that..."

I agree with that statement 110%, I am a body piercer and I started an online perition to ban piercing guns in my home state of NJ because it horrifies me that they are still being used and legally. With all we know about sterilization today there is no reason to allow the public to endanger their health by continuing to use these outdated and dangersous devices that were originally designed to tag cattle (by the way the design was never changed). The fact is that hollow piercing needle piercings done by a trained professional are far less painful as the needle is actually sharp enough to pierce human tissue unlike piercings guns that do blunt force trama to the ear. Sharper = less painful, Dull = more painful.
As far as doctors are concerned it depends on the doctor, most ofthem do not specialize in ear piercing...and as such they ignore the obvious danger of piercing guns and often use those, some better doctors will use a needle pre-sterilized just like a tattoo shop.

Ears should be pierced on the lobes by a gun, this is just a sting & doesn't hurt cost is $20 at the most. Other body piercings are done with a needle that has a small plastic tube over the pin, the part to be pierced is clamped to tighten the skin so as a straight piercing is done, nipple, nose & genital piercings are the most painful, belly piercings are more of a sting than pain but as long as it is kept clean the pain will subside quickly. A tongue can take around 10 days to heal, these piercings usually start around $60.00 to $80, genital piercings are higher due to the fact of hygeine & other obviuos reasons. these hurt a fair bit.
Tattoo needles are finer and only enter the skin for a few milimetres, a doctors needles are for injections & dont hurt compared to any of the others.

i went to claires back in high school to get a second hole in each ear and they used the "gun technique" and it hurt worse than getting my bellybutton and nose pierced. its because they just push the earring into the ear and it doesn't clear everything out of the way ( the pen ink, your skin). when i told the piercer that, he said it was the worst hting you can do, when you get the gun done instead of the needle, you are more susecptible to ear infections (at the piercing) and they close up alot faste than getting the needle. And that is exactly what happened with me and now i have scar tissue in the way which would make it even more painful to re-pierce.

When I had mine pierced, they hurt quite a bit the first day. I was given a pair of pure gold studs to wear until they healed, and had to put peroxide on them twice a day. Eventually, they healed up, but I couldn't wear regular earrings for at least a month, or the ear lobe would get infected. I had mine done at Claire's so I don't know what doctors use.

One thing I have heard of are earrings that eventually work their way through the earlobe, but you have to wear them for quite a while. That's actually the most painless way to get them done. It's called progressive piercing. I think they sell them at Claire's but I'm not sure. You could ask around.

I didn't think it hurt that bad. Alot of the time the anticipation is alot worse then the pain. I got my ears pierced with the gun, it stung but it was over in a flash. I say don't think about it just go do it!

First of all the lobe using a gun by a professional doesn't hurt.My mom did it for me. SHe had this shop. But anyways once you get the piercing just make sure that you clean it really well and don't close the earring too tight!

Neither is excrutiating. I have two in my right (used to have three) and three in my left, and all of them were more or less momentary. I've had them all done with guns, and it wasn't really a big deal. And as long as you keep them clean and take care of them the way you are instructed to they shouldn't hurt much afterwards either. Infections are something you want to avoid at all costs though. That's where the real pain is.
