My extended family is coming over this weekend for a birthday. The problem is, I am going to be out of town and don't want anybody going in my room messing around with my personal effects (I've already had to do one hard drive reformat because of it). The culprit is my 6 year old cousin who for some reason will not listen when I tell him not to go in there (and my aunt, god bless her, refuses to discipline her child). Is there a way to prevent him from getting in there while I'm gone, while still being able to open the door with relative ease when I get back?

I will be gone for most of the day. I have about a quarter inch of space under the door when its fully closed. Buying a locking doorknob is not an option. I won't be paid in time to have enough $ to buy one and my mother won't let me install it anyways.

The conventional method is with a deadbolt or lockset but since you can't buy one and have it installed in time try installing a loose wedge under the door. Since the direction of the wedge will be in the direction of the opening swing of the door you can open it later. Since you are much stronger than a toddler you can install the wedge with sufficient pressure that the toddler can't open it but you will be able to when you get back. This isn't fool proof but other than using a conventional piece of door hardware you don't have a lot of choices. The other option might be to use a cord or short length of rope, loop and ties one end around the door knob and the other on some other anchor point near the door. Again not fool proof but cheap.

buy an eye bolt with the hook and just make sure you put it high enough so your cousin can't reach it. Then get a toothpick and stand it against the door, when you come back it should still be standing no one will notice it. If any one enters your room the toothpick will fall and you will know if some one has been in the room.

Good luck

how about those gates that people use to keep little kids from falling down stairs and keeping dogs out of rooms buy a couple of those or borrow them from somebody and stack them on top of eachother infront of your door so that the kid can't get to the doorknob. i have a seven year old brother and i have the same issues because i don't have a lock either but i have this doorknob cover which he only recently was able to figure out. if this kid is only going to be at your house for a couple days without your supervision on your room he shouldn't be able to figure it out. i'm sure that you could find them at a hardware store or searc online for one. good luck ^_^

Just put a slide lock at the top of the door, out of reach of the 6 yo, and it's cheap. Or just take the door knob off and take it with you and close the door, and put the knob back on after the kid is gone. just two screws. Good luck

Not being able to lock your door may be a foregone
conclusion. Perhaps you could hide your modem,or
just take it with you. I sometimes do this to restrict
my children's access to our computer. Maybe you
could strategically place a few distractions, like old
toys, in his path. Your cousin's fascination with your
stuff could be hero worship. If you leave a little some-
thing out for him, it could do the trick.

If you can't afford to buy anything to keep the door closed, then just disconnect the power cable from your computer while you are gone, and take it with you. If the bart can't turn on the computer, he won't be able to mess it up.

take some socks and place in the door and slam the door shut on them jamming the door. The brat (kid) should not be able to push it open.

tell your mother not to let anyone in.. is your br on ground floor?
then blockade door from inside, go out the window.

either that or leave something out that the kid shouldn't see and when he/she finds it and goes to their mother (your aunt) and they confront you , you can say "well they should NOT have been in there in the FIRST PLACE, you should watch what your child does ".. this way it's THEIR fault, not yours.

Install a keyed deadbolt. It's not complicated.
