Two leaves of hay morning and night, grass during the afternoon and a cup or two of grain once a day should be just fine for your new baby.

What is a 4 month old Shetland pony doing away from it's mother?? Horses & ponies SHOULD NOT be weaned until 6 months of age. A 4 month old pony still requires a mother's milk & has only begun to figure out hay & grain. Even a pony requires adequate mother's milk for healthy bones, etc. I cannot believe the idiot who sold you a baby didn't know better. Call a Large Animal Vet & have them do a thorough check up on this little thing to be sure it is healthy & talk with them concerning the proper nutrition for your pony. I am not about to give advice on this matter concerning the health of a pony that was weaned tooo early...

Can I be frank and suggest you look for some help elsewhere? Especially where you can meet them face to face? It seems to me that feed is not going to be your only worry.
Go to a local feed store and ask them about what feed is suitable in your area based on your horses size, weight, age and exercise level. Where your horse is kept will influence the type of feed that will be needed.
Try and join a pony club of some sort or hire a trainer to help you bring this little one on. Shetlands are fantastic ponies, but proper handling and training is imperative, especially at your ponies age.
Please don't do it alone- even the most experienced horsepeople need help.
If you are already aware of the above things- I apologise, but I have experienced many people that buy horses (or ponies) without knowing what is required of them.
All the best to you- and don't worry, four to six months of age is ok for weaning. not much earlier than that though.

Your extra beneficial of figuring out to purchase for a pony from some you no who's many times going on with the ponies history. If a pony has been properly dealt with from beginning that's somewhat at 4. I had a sparkling woodland pony from 6months previous, she became dealt with on an common basis and as quickly as she became sufficiently previous my older youngsters crawled throughout her in the previous she'd even had the tack on, as quickly as she'd been mouthed and then had the saddle placed on the subsequent step in basic terms got here clearly, she had the excellent temperament and became very conscious of income new issues, so as you could age isn't continuously a controversy besides you would be able to desire to be an older pony this is grumpy and set in its procedures. superb place to locate a stable pony is thru your community pony club.

Feed it fresh hay twice a day and grain, once a day. Or let it eat grass all day and be sure to give it some grain.
