The short and sweet of it is..., she got the big head, assumed the show was all about her, wanted more money than the other cast members.
When she was about to fold and just accept what the producers offered her, her boyfriend took over her managing and made her hold out for the Big $$$ which never came. In essence her boy friend caused her to be fired

I was a kid at the time of the show, and I can tell you every young man in the USA was ogling Suzanna Somers on a weekly basis. She may have had the least talent, but there's no questioning she was the biggest star at a time when only three networks ruled the USA. In short, she was gigantic. Maybe she did deserve more money than the other players, but the network should've raised everyone's salary. Her demands for a piece of the profits were probably what really did her in, since that was an insane request. Maybe it was her bf, or maybe she was just insane. Either way, its a good example of going too far in a negotiation.

This is what happened:
"She eventually caused friction on the set in 1980 when, after demands for a heavily increased salary ($100,000 a week) were not met, she went on strike and was absent for several taping days. Eventually, co-stars Joyce DeWitt and John Ritter refused to work with her because of this, but, unwilling to fire the actor for fears her absence would cause ratings to decline, the producers of the series retained Somers, who was still under contract, to appear in just the one-minute tag scene of select episodes."
Then they had the characters sister take her place.

If the movie about Threes Company that was on TV a while back is correct, they say she wanted top billing and more money then most actors on TV were paid at that time.

John Ritter was actually the "Star" of the show.
For some reason she believed she "made the show", and it wouldn't last without her.
She wanted top billing, and a big fat juicy raise.
They said; no way. I am really not sure if she quit or was fired; but they evidently didn't think she was as important as she thought she was.

She asked for a pay raise when her contract was up for renewal.
There was allot of politics involved & it got her blackballed & she could not get a TV job.
Was the best thing that happened to her..Look were she is now!

She wanted an obscene amount of money, the network wouldn't give it to her so she quit. I didn't see much talent in her anyway so no big loss.

She wanted more money, I believe the networks would not pay her what she wanted. She was being a pre-madonna and it came back to bite her in her big ol' butt.
