I was told that I needed to work on my vocabulary. Does that mean it is not extensive enough? Do I sound ignorant or something?

depends on where you're from and if english is your first or second language. if it's your first, try reading more and looking at words and what they mean in context. same thing for english as a second language. looking at the way you typed your question, though, i would say you have a better vocabulary than half the english people that use the internet regularly.
