When Julian Lennon was at infant school he drew a picture of his freind lucy floting in the sky surrounded by stars which were diamond shaped and bought it home to show his dad. When John Lennon asked what the picture was he said it was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. John thought that would make a great song title and the rest is history.

It is a combination of Lennon’s son drawing a picture and LSD use.
The lyrics of the song feature image-laden verses which present an overtly psychedelic travelogue describing a boat trip through a fantastical land of "cellophane flowers", "newspaper taxis" and "marshmallow pies" alternating with chorus sections which simply repeat the song's title. This, as well as the initials of the title (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) and the dreamlike-quality of the melody, has led many to speculate that the song was written in reference to LDS, a drug which Lennon in particular had been using heavily at the time.
While Lennon and the Beatles were often frank about their drug use, for decades they denied that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" had anything to do with LSD. In a 2004 interview, Paul McCartney spoke openly about his Beatles-era drug use, revealing that songs such as "Day Tripper" and "Got To Get You Into My Life" were written directly about LSD and marijuana. When questioned about "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," he noted that Julian Lennon's painting had inspired the song, but that it was "pretty obvious" that the song was about an acid trip.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is code for LSD. It was ( probably still is) a popular hallucinogenic drug. Back then you couldn't say things like that in a song. Now, they talk about pot and coke and heroin all the time. They used to use codes. I think it's a lot cooler to use a code, and I love that song!

Lucy was a childhood friend of Jullian Lennon. He drew a picture when he was little. When Paul asked Jullian the name of his picture he said "It's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." and so a title was born.
So the story goes. . . .

So unhappy. Too youthful. death be no longer proud. The track could be favored completely nicely as poetry and track without mandatory connection to LSD. LSD is luvely, mate, yet so's the track, in it quite is very own appropriate, write, appropriate? I have been given the pass with Harry the horse who dances the Waltz -- the imaginative and prescient is definitely in my head -- i've got self belief in Harry. nicely Eleanor Rigby too. And Madonna with toddler at her ft (who is familiar with how she makes ends meet?).

LSD is a drug, an acid actually, quite popular around the time this song was written. It is simply a metaphoric way for the Beatles to write about their drug of choice....
