You put it in after you start to bleed, as tampons absorb fluids they would have nothing to absorb but discharge if put in before menstruation so increasing vaginal splitting, also putting you at risk of other tampon-related health risks unnecessarily. You can only really use pads or menstrual cups before your period is due – i.e. before you start bleeding.

You put them in when you start to bleed. You don't want to put a tampon in when you don't have your period because they hurt then they are dry to take out.

I can more or less set my watch by my period, so I always wear a tampon on the day I know I'm going to start, and just change it every couple of hours. If you don't want to waste tampons, you could always just wear a light pantiliner until you start, then switch to a tampon.

Normally after, but if you know its coming that day and don't want to bleed, you can always put it in a few hours before so you dont accidentaly leak

when you start bleeding, unless you bleed a lot and you want to avoid an embarrasment then be prepared ahead of time if you know you are going to get it.

Whoops! Am I ever in the wrong thread. I thought this was going to be a question about the use of periods versus semi-colons, etc.
