i checked out the map for you at sfmuni.org. i guess the best way from the wharf would be taking the F down the embarcadero, back to market street, get off at market and steurt, and take the 71 bus west to haight/ashbury. if i were you, i'd walk. san francisco is the most amazing city in the world (next to new york, of course), you want to absorb as much of it as possible. i was there for a month during the summer, i miss it like crazy. don't forget to visit Bay Bread (fillmore/pine). the best french pastries...ever.

The quickest way is to take a cab, but that will set you back about $25 dollars, so I will tell you how to get there on a combination of on foot and MUNI. The whole trip should take no more than 45 mintues, except on Sunday when MUNI sucks and it will take an hour.

Leave Fisherman's Wharf and cross the street by the parking lot to get to Beach St where there is a stop for the "F" Market line. There will probably be a line of people already waiting. The F line is a line of restored trolleys, very picturesque, mostly only used by tourists. Have your $1.50 ready. It will take a while for everyone to board, but don't be discouraged, this is the longest wait.

Take the F past the Ferry Building, around the plaza and down Market Street. This part is kind of slow and you can actually go downstairs and take the subway to cut off about 10 minutes from your trip, but if this is your first time I don't recommend it. It is confusing and by staying on the F you can enjoy the view.

It will take about 15 minutes for the F to lumber its way down Market. Get off at Van Ness street. Ask the conductor if you are unsure where that is. He should call it out.

You are in kind of an unsavory neighborhood at this point, where there are lots of homeless around, but nothing really dangerous, so don't be concerned.

Cross Van Ness (a major four lane street) and walk the two longish blocks down to Gough. There is kind of a three-way intersection there where Gough, Market and Haight St. all meet at a funny angle and you need to cross Gough to get to the bottom of Haight St. At this point you are at a bus stop and you can take any of the 6,7, or 71 up Haight. Whichever one you take, stay on them for about a dozen blocks, past a park on your left. Get off after that and enjoy your trip in the Upper Haight.

You probably don't want to get off in the Lower Haight, which is only a few blocks away. There are some good bars and record stores here, but the bulk of the shopping is further up, near Haight and Ashbury. All the good clothing and shoe stores are in the Upper Haight.

I think the quickest way is Bay St. (by Tower Records) west to Van Ness. where you turn left. Go straight for some 12 blocks and turn right on Bush. You're now going west again. Go up Bush for about 15 blocks - staying in the middle lane. But when you cross Divisadero get in the left lane, and within 30 seconds Bush will curve to the left and become Masonic. You're going south now. Continue on for another, ummmmmmm, 12-15 blocks. When you cross 2 big one way streets, Fell and Oak, get in the right lane cuz Haight be coming soon - turn right!

Sounds complicated but it's a snap - voici:
West on Bay
South on Van Ness
West on Bush
South on Masonic

Bush St. is like inner-city minifreeway. At a moderate speed you can time the lights and book across the city.

I haven't any reason to bypass from Frisco to NYC by way of fact I stay in New Mexico and the only place I ever extremely bypass is to L.A. for company... And besides, i could prefer to confirm you pull a gooseneck horse trailer, a commute trailer or a action photograph equipment trailer at the back of your extreme-velocity prepare.

Get on Divisadero, turn right when you get to Haight, it's only a few blocks to Asbury.
