First the only dumb question is the question that is never asked; of course if you ask a question that sounds dumb then expect dumb and even insulting answers, from people with small brains.

The Presidential Election is still two years away so there are no officially announced candidates yet. That would create too many problems and leave them open to attack for too long.

The Republicans are going to probably lose this year's election and unless they do something great between now and the next two years they will have a poor showing in the Presidential Election.

President George Bush has served his two terms and can never run again (thank god). It is traditional for the current Vice President to run for president, but I doubt if Dick Cheney is going to be foolish enough to do that. He will get clobbered in the election and, unlike now, he will have to take the blame for how he is running the government. Besides he has already had 8 years of being in charge and should be tired of it by now (hopefully).

A Republican will run for President, someone has to, but unless he gets a miracle he isn't going to win. Newt Genrich could be a possible candidate, but at this point the election is still two years away and that's too far out for anyone to start running for office.

Hilary Clinton is going to probably run for President, but she has made a lot of enemies and is a very unpopular candidate. Al Gore might be the best candidate, but he has publicly said that he will not run. So the Democratic Party or someone powerful in it will have to ask him first, which Al Gore might be banking on (isn’t politics fun, and confusing).

Other candidates could pop up, even Condie Rice would make a good candidate, but no one is foolish enough to announce yet. The political campaigns are tough and can get dirty. The worst thing is that your rivals will investigate every aspect of your life looking for anything that they can hold against you. No past mistake is too small, no error in judgment is too little to not raise. The longer you give people to find this stuff, the more they can dig up. So it is critical to not get into the race too quickly.

On the other hand it is never to soon to start raising money, political campaigns are hugely expensive you will need vast sums of money to make a real run for the office. The moment you stop spending on a campaign is the moment that you drop out of the public attention. The public has a short memory so it is always a race to get more money and not run out of it before the final crunch right before the election. It is expected that Hilary Clinton will run for office as a Senator for New York, and then take the money she raises to fund her bid for the presidency. Other politicians may attempt this as well.

Then there are always the “dark horse” candidates, those who seemingly come out of nowhere to try and run for office. You will have a hard time predicting them. If Colen Powel ran for the Presidency he would be such a candidate, because he has publicly said that his wife doesn’t want him to run for the office. He MAY have also said that he doesn’t want to run, but that could change. I don’t think the he will run for the Presidency, but he would make an excellent Vice Presidential candidate. He is a very respected leader and recently he made statements to distance himself from the Bush administration. These statements are probably only his honest opinions, but it could make him a factor to consider. He could be one of the people that could make another politician’s career by “giving him the nod.” If the highly respected former general and Secretary of Defense supported someone then that person would have a great political boost. These powerful people keep their support secret until they have to give it. It would be better to not give that support, because any mistakes made by the candidate could come down on you. Support like this is hard to predict and it can make or ruin a candidate, it would really help a “dark horse” candidate.

In fact people are already running for the office of the President of the United States. They are doing it while seeming to not do it, or from behind the scenes. They could also make a single error that will remove them from the running. All it takes is one bad decision that their rivals can show as an example of poor leadership and the person is done. The recent Congressional Page example is going to sharply affect Representative Haster, Speaker of the House (the top position). His inaction and failure to react quickly enough in the scandal is going to cost him support. He is going to have to run in this years midterm election, so that will be tough. If he is reelected to the Office then he probably won’t be elected to the position as Speaker. He has shown poor leadership and it would not be popular to put him 3rd in line for the presidency. Haster may even have known that Representative Foley was propositioning male House Pages for sex, but the Democrats will claim that he should have known. This issue came up out of nowhere, although we have learned that Congressman Foley was suspected of getting too familiar with his pages for 3 years. The crisis will also affect the Republican candidate that has to run for his seat in office. This person’s only connection may be that they are in the same political party, but that is enough to associate him with the scandal. The ballets are printed with Foley’s name on them, so he won’t even be on the official ballet, but by law all votes for Foley will go to him. Some people will think that Foley is still trying to run for office and not want to vote for him. Others will have poor opinions of the Republican Party caused by the scandal, others won’t want to vote for someone they don’t know about, and still others will just feel the entire issue is too slimy and they will stay away from the election entirely. All of this is going to only hurt the candidate before he even has a chance to start running.

There will be people who always try to run for the office, but never have a serious chance of winning. Ralph Nader has been a presidential candidate before and the Green Party is probably going to have him run again in two years. But, he is not making a run for office as much as drawing attention to his party’s causes. The attention of a national election will trickle down to the local level, so when Ralph Nader runs for the office he helps all the politicians in his party that are running for their own political offices. This is US wide attention so it can be more economical than helping each and every local politician. Once it was predicted that the various third parties (Communist, Libertarian, Green and so on) would never win a political election, but then once a black person would never be considered to be eligible for political office. Times change and as long as the third parties keep trying they have a chance to win. The third parties have achieved success on the local level and they have won seats in Congress, so they are valid political parties. If they keep trying then they could eventually win, or at least be taken more seriously and so help their party candidates on the local level even more.

Officially, no one is running for the office of President yet. It is too hard to predict what will happen in two years (we could have another event as powerful as 9/11). The front runners could die or be disgraced. It is just too risky to make a bid for office now. Other people will have to be pulled into race. They won’t be planning on running, but the needs of the political Party will “force” them to consider a bid on the office. A dark horse candidate might appear in this manner, a person could suddenly become a major political official by handling a crisis very well, and so be a possible candidate. However, people are raising money for their attempts to run and people are quietly making plans to run for office.
