They came over the Bering straights from Asia in one of the first wave of imigrants about 60000 years ago. They were pushed south by succeeding waves of immigrants.
Strangely though they displaced a group of people in Sth America that were related to the Australian Aborigines. The ancestors of these people live on the furtherest tip of Sth America even to day.

My guess is that they were part of the major migration of Asians that came over the Berhing (SP) Strait in very ancient times. It is believed (with some dna evidence to back it up) that the Native American ancestry is basically Chinese and to some extent Japanese.
