It's driving me nuts! I just don't like those red strips.
Can anyone also please tell me if defragmenting your comp three times in a row will do any harm?

Your drive probably does not have enough space on it to complete the defrag properly, so it leaves what it doesn't have room for fragmented. It's best to delete old files before doing the defrag. It will not hurt to defrag more than once in a row, but if it doesn't have room, it still won't completely defrag.

No you will not do any harm to your computer by defragmenting it 3 times in a row. The defrag program that comes built into windows is a watered down version of Diskeeper.

If you would like to do a more thorough job including the paging file, you can get the full version of Diskeeper. The other advantage to this program is that you can schedule it to run automatically so you don't have to worry about it. It will run you about $30.

Some files will not be moved. It doesn't matter whether you have WIN 95, 98, or XP. Drives fragment with use, especially when surfing the internet. Defragging 3 times in a row is unnecessary, and a total waste of time.

i asume you are using XP. You can never defrag too often. However i have never had a problem defragging my puter in the 4 years I have had it.
Try doing a ... disk cleanup.... as this should be done before defragging and be sure all the boxes are checked and that you are cleaning the C drive or whatever your main drive is. this deletes your temp internet files , recycle bin etc. Then try defragging again... Be sure you are defragging your main drive such as the 'C' drive.
If that doesnt work then try a ... system restore.....

I had a problem like this before, and the problem was with my harddrive. It turns out there were alot of 'burnt out' parts in my harddrive, which could explain why this is happening to you. If you have an older computer and it seems like you have a considerably less amount of space on your harddrive, it may need to be replaced. My advice is take it to a local computer repair place if this is the case. The shop may be able to install a new harddrive for you if you bring one in (a 120gb from wal mart costs $70-$100) Thats what i did with my PC and now it runs great.

I think this area is the pagefile/swapfile area, which is always being written to, so can't be defragged from within windows.

Defragging often is no problem. Often there are areas of your hard drive that are "anchored" in place and Windows does not want them to move. This is the simple answer to your question. Forget about the "reds" and defrag.

Use Diskeeper to defrag and make sure to run it in SAFE MODE, if you want good results. Remove junk files and unwanted registry entries before running defrag.

It shouldn't do any harm.
I wouldn't waste my time, though.
Defrag once a month & forget about it.
