when someone sends me a mesage i would like to hear a noise of some kind. how do i set that up?

With regard to which messenger?

Many instant messengers dont play a sound if a message is received while the window is in focus. To get a noise, simply click anywhere outside the message window after sending a message to stop it being the focus (or minimise it) and you should hear a sound when you get another message.
