All he wants is to draw US attention and meet US officials on bilateral talks. He's ready to give up nukes on two conditions economical aid and international recognition and an assurance that US will not attack him.
The US won't accept that, of course, and it's ready to tolerate a nuclear armed North Korea as long as it gets enough guarantees that none of those weapons will end in hands of terrorists.
No big deal really. The big problem is for China, South Korea and Japan. None of them wants a North Korea with nuclear capability and that might spark a nuclear race in the area, with Japan and South Korea acquiring their own arsenal of nukes. That's a nightmare scenario for China.

I've read that Kim Jong ll is upset about a South Korean becoming Secretary General of the UN, and that's why he did he the test. I have no proof.

If the sanctions are maintained they will hurt after a bit. Of course his people are already starving all he cares about is his outside rockets and his little pocket rocket. He's one crazy potbellied dog eating Korean!I don't think he has the means to strike anyone with much right now. I say take him out asap. But what do I know.

I dont think at this stage North Korea cares about anything! It is a danderous situation that is quickly getting out of place! I dare say this contry will be challenged to open warfare ,soon by the Asian nations! Am I afraid ? not so musch for me , but my children , our children ! You see what they DO to their own , imagine US? This world as we know it is soon coming to some drastic things> Hugs.
