If your new to the Bass then get a four string because its simpler and your teacher may find it easier to teach you on a four string. Plus when your a noob bassist you don't really know what type of sound you want until you've trained your ear. If you have some experience under your belt (like a couple years or so) then that really depends on the style. For heavier styles then the 5 string is probably better. For different style you won't as easily find a use for the fifth string (but you may). Ignoring the fact that I more of an intense style, I would much rather have a five string because of the fact that you have a bigger range. This also makes it easier to play with a guitar in drop tunings. I say four string if your learning, five if you got some experience. I would personally choose a five string but what ever does yeah fancy!

Cursive has a cello.
Belle & Sebastian is more folky, but they have a whole string section.
Faith No More has used strings... Woodpecker from Mars is mostly a viola solo.
