It sounds like a blockage in the line.
You should keep pumping to see if you can clear it. I would also buy some liquid plumber and pour it into the toilet. It won't do anything until after you flush it and the chemicals reach the clog though so be careful to not spill toilet water and liquid plumber on the floor when you flush a second time. If you don't clear it after 30 minutes then you need something stronger.
Before you go any further you might want to consider calling a plumber. You may not want to try this yourself.
You can go to home depot and get a drain snake. This is a tool with a coiled wire like a spring that ends in a hook like structure and ends in a container for the wire and that has a handle on it so you can turn it. To use the snake you stick the hook like end into the water and turn the crank to drive down the pipe, then into and through the clog. Clearly you are going to have to flush once to open the valve so you can reach the clog. You can poke the clog and drill through it and then try to pull it out. You will end up with a mess on the end of the snake so I would buy some latex gloves to avoid handling it.
The best way to really do this job is to go through the drain cleanout plug, and you will need a long snake to make sure you can reach the clog. If you feel real handy around the home you might be able to do it, but I don't advise it. Since you asked this question you probably don't know how to do it or even how to find the drain cleanout plug. You can find a book on it a home center and use that as a guide. It will be cheaper than hiring a plumber.
This kind of work is exactly where Rotor Rooter got it's start, but you will have to pay for that name to use their services. You should call several plumbers and get an estimate, then after you recover from your heart attack, hire the cheapest one. That is the best way to handle the problem, and the most expensive.

Do you have a septic tank, or are you hooked up to a city sewer system? There are several products for slow drains (not clogs)...most are in a powder form. You need to be careful about what you put in your toilet if you have a septic tank though...like you shouldn't clean with bleach. Also, a lot of the "drop-in" cleaners that go in the back of the toilet can lead to slow drains. I'd try a slow drain powder first. Run some warm water through the pipes first.

keep pumping or using plunger until you hear a swish sound and ll the water suddenly drains out of the toilet. May even overflow while pumping it. A good tool to use if you have 1 or know someone with one is a toilet snake. Metal tape or bendable rod that has barbs or coil at the end. They work well but can scratch your toilet. Good luck

...the way you say "pump that hole" made me have to offer my expertise. Yes - it's like mama always said, when life get's you down, jusk keep on pumpin! (and chew your food more, girl!)
Seriously though, you prpbably can clear the clog with continued pumping. Assuming there wasn't anything other than "the usual stuff" flushed down the pipe, the longer it sits in the water, the more it will get broken down and should clear. Plus, in most cases the pipes beyond the bowl itself are of a larger diameter, so if it got that far, it's only got a little further to go.
Of course, if you think something went down the pipe that isn't supposed to be in there, you risk jamming it further down if it's not water soluable.

dont use a toilet snake, youll break the bowl. instead use 1 of those 3 ft flex-grabbers to kinda feel out the thing. if the water eventually goes down anyway. its probably a toy or a fancy unmint tip deodorizer/cleaner that is stuck in the ole stink hole, gas pocket/ and wont pass. youll be abloe to grab an obstruction with this. otherwise home owner, find a guy with a crush on you, buy him a beer(please, its worth a beer) and dont get to close. rent a power snake from a home outlet. and since your there, use it on the kitchen, and cleanouts as well, anywhere you can. if you rent, tell the landlord, or tell him and if he has no action, do as suggested but take a picture, then deduct from the rent, and present him a copy of your reciepts and a copy of the picture.

HI, I AM A PLUMBER AND THERE IS PROBABLY JUST TOO MUCH TOILET PAPER AND SOLIDS IN THE TOILET TO LET IT FLOW THROUGH THE TRAP, MOST PEOPLE OWN A CHEAP PLUNGER THAT WILL NOT WORK VERY GOOD, SO TOMORROW GO TO YOUR HARDWARE STORE AND BUY A GOOD ONE MADE OF RUBBER WITH A FLANGE ON THE END OF IT WHICH WILL PROBABLY RUN BETWEEN 5 AND 15 DOLLARS, BUT A WHOLE LOT CHEAPER THAN A PLUMBER AND YOU WILL HAVE IT NEXT TIME YOU RUN INTO THIS PROBLEM, IF THAT DOESNT WORK THEN A BOTTLECAP OR OTHER SMALL OBJECT PROBABLY FELL INTO THE TOILET AND YOU MIGHT NEED A PLUMBER FOR THAT ONE BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED A GOOD AUGER OR MAYBE EVEN HAVE TO REMOVE TOILET AND TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN, BUT TRY THE PLUNGER AND I BET IT WILL WORK, GOOD LUCK.

2 options - next time you flush, hold down the lever and dont let it up. This will allow all of the water in the tank to drain into the bowl, and create more pressure to push down whatever is stopping it up...be careful - let go of the lever if it gets close to the rim, or you may be cleaning up a mess. The second option is to get an auger instead of a plunger. Good luck!

It may not be your toilet. It may be your drain line. You need to find your clean out for your main drain. It should be located outside building with about a 4" dia cap. Remove cap and snake it, to be sure this line is clear. Another problem may be a plugged vent pipe. If vent is plugged water will drain very slow. The vent pipe comes out of your roof close to bathroom area. It is the one with no cap, because you dont care if water gets in it. If the line and vent are open, it's time to pull the toilet and find the obstruction.

get a cup of water,(big cup) flush your toliet, when it should have flushed dump your water in the toliet and it should flush. If it does this everytime you flush, then you need a new toliet. We have that prob, slow flush, sometimes not even flushing completely.

Liquid Plumber or Draino. If it's really bad, you'll need a pro.
