Evanescence is an alternative rock/alternative metal[1] band from Little Rock, Arkansas, USA.

Early in their career, the rock band garnered local fame in Little Rock before releasing their first major label album "Fallen", which went on to sell over 14 million copies worldwide.[2].

Although usually categorized as rock, Evanescence does not easily fit into any one rock subcategory. The band are sometimes labeled by media sources as, and take influences from, gothic metal, alternative rock, nu metal, piano rock, arena rock, and wagnerian rock (the latter especially in the group's videos).

Having sold nearly 14 million records worldwide, well more than 6 million in the U.S. alone, with their major-label debut Fallen, Evanescence is poised to continue their meteoric rise with their forthcoming CD, The Open Door (Wind-up Records), scheduled for release October 3. The album from the two-time Grammy-winning band is defined by Amy Lee's beautiful melodies, compelling lyrics, poignant piano and stunning vocals, fused with Terry Balsamo's urgent, yet intricate guitar, to form a seamless, ethereal mixture that perfectly channels the band's hard rock and classical sensibilities. The contributions of members John LeCompt (guitar) and Rocky Gray (drums) are also evident.

Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. The two met at a youth camp in Arkansas, where Moody heard Lee playing "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf on the piano. [3]

The pair discovered they liked music and they began to write songs together (the first was "Solitude" by Amy Lee, followed by "Understanding" by Ben Moody, "Give Unto Me" by Amy Lee, and "My Immortal" by Ben Moody). The songs were altered lyrically and musically by them, which allowed both individuals to receive equal credit for their composition.

For some time the two were unable to recruit additional musicians and did not have sufficient funds for professional assistance. Thus, they were unable to play live shows. However, two songs, "Understanding" and "Give Unto Me", found their way onto local music charts, and demand for a live show increased. When the band finally made an appearance, they became one of the most popular acts in the area. They went through several names, including Childish Intentions and Stricken, before deciding on the name Evanescence (from the word "evanescent", meaning the act of vanishing, synonymous to disappearance). Lee said she loves the name because it puts a picture in your mind, one that relates to the band's sound, which is what she wanted to do.

Amy Lee, Singer

Born: 13 December 1981
Birthplace: Riverside, California
Best Known As: Vocalist for the rock band Evanescence
Amy Lee is a vocalist and songwriter with the rock band Evanescence, whose debut album, Fallen (2003), was nominated for five Grammys in 2003. The band won two Grammys that year, for Best New Artist and for Best Hard Rock Performance, the latter for the hit song "Bring Me To Life," featured in the movie Daredevil (2003, starring Ben Affleck). Lee and band co-founder Ben Moody (guitarist) met at summer camp in Arkansas when they were teenagers. Although they rarely performed live, their early recordings gained a local following and in 2001 they were signed to a recording contract. John Le Compt (guitar), Rocky Gray (drums) and Will Boyd (bass) joined the band, and the success of Fallen made them overnight rock stars. Within a year, however, Moody left the band and was replaced by guitarist Terry Balsalmo. The goth-rock sound of Evanescence has been called a mix of Tori Amos-like vocals with Linkin Park-style rock.

Amy Lee the rock singer is not to the same as Amy Lee the saxophone player.

Lee has a trademark neo-goth style, marked by her occasional use of gothic make-up and taste for Victorian-styled clothing. She also designs many of her own clothes, including those worn in the music video for Going Under. In concerts, she often wears a corset and fishnets, and once had a notable piercing on her left eyebrow, which is visible on the cover of Fallen.

Many fans praise Lee for her refusal to emulate other celebrities by using sex appeal in her music. She has stated on a number of occasions that she would never flash her breasts or engage in other publicity stunts that would draw attention to herself. In fact, in the music video for "Everybody's Fool," she aimed to mock such artists by suggesting celebrities who use sex to appeal to an audience are "everybody's fool" and are in fact, merely peddling "lies" (the unifying theme of the music video).[11]

Other projects
In 2000, Amy sang guest vocals on David Hodges (former Evanescence keyboardist) songs Breathe (on The Summit Church: Summit Worship CD) and an unreleased song called Fall Into You. [1]

She also did backup vocals on a song called 'Missing You' on Big Dismal's 2003 debut album, 'Believe'.

Lee is featured on the hit Seether track "Broken" (a duet with ex-boyfriend Shaun Morgan), which is featured on their album Disclaimer II as well as the soundtrack for the 2004 film The Punisher.

Lee was working on the opening theme of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and writing additional music for the film, but the music was rejected. However, Lee has been quoted as saying that the material she didn't use for the movie is "just more great stuff for the new album" [8].

There was some speculation that the song had been cut and used in several tracks though Lee has stated that this is not true [9]. In fact, the song will not appear on the album in its entirety, but part of it is used as the introduction to "Good Enough"[10]. The album is entitled The Open Door, confirmed in the May 2006 issue of the music magazine Blender. The album is stated to be released on October 3, 2006, confirmed by the official Evanescence website [6].

Fallen and lawsuit
Her first major album Fallen has been certified 6x Platinum[5] , spent 43 weeks in the Billboard Top 10 and has sold over 14 million [6] copies worldwide.

Then on October 22, 2003, guitarist Ben left the band stating the reasons for his departure were "creative differences." In an interview several months later, Amy said: "We'd gotten to a point that if something didn't change, we wouldn't have been able to make a second record." She also said "We're finally a real band, not just Ben and I and a few others thrown together" [4]

Lee in the music video for Bring Me to LifeOn December 1, 2005, former Evanescence manager Dennis Rider filed a lawsuit against Lee for breach of contract. The suit claims Rider was prematurely and unjustly terminated from his position as manager of Evanescence.

In return, Lee filed a counter-suit against Rider for "breach of fiduciary duty, sexual assault and battery, professional negligence, currency conversion, and other charges". The suit also claims Rider "neglected Lee's career and business and has focused his efforts on having extramarital affairs, hiding them from his wife, becoming intoxicated during business meetings, physically abusing women and boasting about it, making repeated unwelcome sexual advances toward Lee, receiving fees in excess of what was provided for in his management agreement and using Lee's corporate credit card to purchase gifts for his mistress."

Rider's attorney, Bert Deixler, claimed in a statement that Rider had fully performed all of the duties and obligations owed by the firm under the management agreement, and that he had always conducted himself by the highest professional standards.
