the pipe coming from the wall to attach to the shower head doesn't have any threads to screw on a shower head, it has a ball on the end..making it basically impossible to keep the shower head attached. i am not sure how its held on this long. but now when i turn the water on in the shower, the shower head basically flies off at me. funny...but not fun. i can see about an inch in from the wall that i can unscrew the pipe and attach a new one..but i am not sure what to expect when i do that, and what to know when i go to buy the pipe..suggestions?

HI, I AM A PLUMBER ANDYOU JUST NEED TO GO TO HARDWARE STORE AND GET A NEW SHOWERHEAD, SHOWER ARM WHICH HEAD SCREWS ONTO AND A ESCUTCHEON PLATE TO COVER YOUR HOLE IN WALL, AND SOME TEFLON TAPE . TAKE PLIERS AND SCREW THE OLD ONE OUT AND HOPE THE ELBOW IN THE WALL IS SCREWED INTO THE 2X4 SO IT DOES NOT MOVE IF IT IS NOT YOU WILL NEED SOMEONE TO HELP YOU REACH UP THE BACK OF THE WALL AND TRY TO HOLD IT, BEFORE SCREWING THE OLD ONE OUT HAVE THE NEW ONE TAPED WITH THE TEFLON AND READY TO GO , ONCE YOU HAVE IT OUT JUST INSTALL THE NEW ONE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS, GOOD LUCK. PS, ALL SHOWERHEAD ARMS ARE 1/2'' IN SIZE SO THEY ARE ALL INTERCHANGEABE.

The pipe that is going to the shower head has no water in it when the shower is turned off, so it is safe to remove the pipe with a small pipe wrench. Then you can take it to a local hardware store, or Home Depot, & have it sized for the replacement piece. There are typically two different pipes for this, that come already chromed. One is straight, & the other has about a 30 degree bend in it so that it can point down after it's screwed in. When you get the replacement part, don't forget to have some pipe dope, or plumbers thread tape on hand as well. You don't want the new connection leaking inside your walls & damaging them.
Meanwhile, I am not sure about the pipe you described with the ball on the end. Are you sure that the ball is not a leftover part from a previously broken shower head? Try to hold the main pipe from turning with a small pipe wrench & see if you can unscrew the "Ball" from the pipe using a vise grip, or a pair of channel lock pliers. Also try to protect the chrome from damage with the pipe wrench teeth by being gentle & not digging them in too hard. If you can remove the ball on the end then there should be some thread to work with, & you won't need to replace the chrome nipple.

First turn off the water that supplies the shower then attach a locking pliers to the pipe and turn it off that way. I would take the pipe to the store and explain to them what happened, they will be able to tell you what to replace it with,

You need a "threaded nipple" of the proper length. Unscrew the old one and take it to the hardware or plumbing supply.

When you replace it, wrap the threads with teflon tape.

okay, first u spray the other one that is up with W-D 40 and remove it , then carry it down to the local hardware store and they will find u one like it or the same size.
Then u bring it home and screw it on, use chapstick to stay on better.

the only thing I can tell you is to turn the water off going to your shower or you will have a big mess.
