I have to say that in the beginning it has a Potential energy and then when energy is released it goes to Kinetic; however, then from Kinetic it goes to Potential when the ground is hit.

without looking up anything at all....

It starts out as potential. There is a charge buildup in the ground and clouds, so that creates the potential for energy.

The actual lightning itself....ummmmm.... I wouldn't say that is kinetic energy. Well.... I think lightning is a current, which means moving electrons, so that is kinetic energy of a sort. The light we see is simply photons being ejectred from electrons, so that is radiation, but that is not most of the energy. Most of the energy is the electric current. I guess you could classify that as kinetic.

Lightning is the discharging of potential energy so I suppose it'd technically be kinetic in nature. Potential energy doesn't do the doing....the potential for something to happen is there. For example, if you were walking along a cliff, you have the potential to fall off, that potential energy turns into kinetic energy when you fall. Lightning is the result of conduction.

Potential energy of static charge in the clouds, converted to lightening, moving charge, that is kinetic energy.

Potential to kinetic, and interestingly enough... in a ground strike, from the ground upwards to the clouds, and not the otherway around, like it appears...

Good luck -
