Holden is haunted by his younger brother Allie dying. This disillusions him and is a large reason for why he is so bitter. He can't comprehend why such a nice person would die so young.

In addition, his parents are very distant to him. The fact that they never make an appearance in the book underscores this point. They pretty much just threw him into a private school and don't really care about his life.

They were never around. They sent him off to boarding school. They were more into their Social life. Its been a long time since I read it though.

i havent read this book in a long long time...but as far as family goes and its relation to his breakdown...

id start with allies death...he never comes to terms with it...(think about how he kept his glove, and wrote poetry over it, and how he 'talks' to allie)...all significant...

also his family wants him to fill a role of ivy league prep school boy and thats not how he envisions himself...(parental struggle/societal struggle)

this should give you a place to start...

he thinks his sister only contributed and helped him and his parents never helped becasue whenever he failed a school he was sent to another one thus making him think tthat he was not loved
