High school seniors are being bombarded with warnings to study or take classes for the SAT. I know that's a test for colleges, but isn't it like any other standarized multiple-choice, timed test? I imagine it'll be similar to the Star Test or the High School Exit Exam (only, there's an essay). No one ever studies for those important tests, and they still do fine. Is the SAT THAT much harder??

It depends on the person. SAT's are important because it is one of the only tests accepted by nearly all colleges and Universities. I would say the level of difficulty if you are an average student would be higher than your run of the mill exit exam. If you are an above average student, you should still study if you plan to go to a certain university. If you are a below average student, hey...theres always community college...

You need to have basic algebra, algebra 2 and geometry under control. So you can study for the math, though if you did well in class you should be fine.

Kids who take the test more than once often do better in each successive test. That might have to do with feeling more comfortable. The test format and atmosphere become more familiar.

Taking classes can be helpful for the same reason. There are fewer surprises, and classes help people feel more confident.

But yes, it's just a standardized test. If you don't usually have a lot of test anxiety, you'll have an advantage.

It is different, but unimportant, in my opinion. Many colleges don't give a hoot how you did on the SAT. They care if you got good grades and can write a decent acceptance letter. Worry not, young college-bound soul. You will crush them.
