A vitae is your pedigree, so to speak. I work in a law office and we use many experts and we always get their vita's or (CV's), the other side is usually going to want them. So they are a testimony to why they are experts in what we are going to use them for. It list papers they have written, or other works they have had published, speechs they have given, etc... People have these after they are already established in their field.

A resume is what you use to sell yourself in trying to obtain employment. You list your education and other skills that make you right for the job you are trying to get.

Curriculum vitae (CV) and a resume are much the same thing.

CV is latin and a bit fancier way of saying resume.

But for most purposes they are interchangable words.

This is what Wikipedia has to say:
A résumé (often spelled resumé or resume) is a document containing a summary or listing of relevant job experience and education, usually for the purpose of obtaining an interview when seeking employment. The word résumé is used especially in the United States and in English Canada; the Latin term curriculum vitæ (often abbreviated CV) is instead used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, French Canada and some Commonwealth countries, as well as in the academic fields in North America, and in many languages other than English. In some regions (such as Australia and India) CV and résumé are used interchangeably.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your CV or resume. << smile >>

I think a resume is shorter. It is more to the point - maybe a 1-2 page summary of education, experience and skills and a curriculum vitae has a lot of details that talks about education, experience and for instance any honors, papers, published articles, awards, affiliations, presentations you've done, etc.

Hi,

A CV is primarily used in the academic world and discusses ones academic history in much more depth than a resume. The latter is primarily used in the business world and often places more emphasis on work experience.

Just my two cents,

Leo

ps. curriculum vitae is Latin for 'the course of one's life'.
