I am considering a visit of about a month, just to enjoy the sunshine and the beach, etc. I'm hoping for somewhere economical and fun, but not fancy.

You should know before you go that beaches of the gulf coast are not in the same league with those on the Pacific or Caribbean coasts. You may find the beaches in the Veracruz area relaxing and enjoyable, just don't expect them to look like pictures you have seen of prime Mexican beaches.

The area's beaches will be economical, there are no fancy resorts in the area.

A quaint and colorful riverside town you may wish to visit is Tlacotalpan, south of Veracruz.

It's a website of an expat living in Veracruz, who has explored the area in depth. The site is a little difficult to navigate, but is full of info.

Hi im from there , if you go north try playa Costa Esmeralda , is nice and there are alot of hotels
next to the beach, the price is about 55 Usd,specially at that place.
If you go by Veracruz port try the ones at Boca de el Rio or Chahalacas.
Have a nice trip

Tips for travel: Buy a an oyster card as many other have also mentioned. Try to buy a weekly travel card, as it gives you unlimited travel on both train and bus. Try to take your oyster card everywhere you go as paying in cash can be very expensive compared to the oyster card rates. Going for walks on a sunny summer day along the embankment and westminster bridge is beautiful, you can visit the tate modern/Britain art museum (free entry)and then watch the sun set, go on a boat cruise (few pounds), have dinner in Sohos has many wonderful Chinese restaurants or other great places to eat on a budget: Nandos, Mcdonalds, Wagamama. London has lots to offer so your going to have a nice time, with endless shops, museums, cinemas, clubs, restaurants, bars and landscapes which you could admire all day. What ever you do do not stand on the pavement with your street maps where people are about to cross the road because this blocks peoples way and during the rush hour it can get very busy. Have fun

Tecolutla Veracruz is probably the nicest beach area, there is a river system with mangroves this is where anaconda was filmed this is nice to see. you can visit the ruins of El Tajin and see where Vanilla is grown and produced.
