First let me ease your mind, it won't hurt and you will be fine. Since it is your first time I recommend buying the slim size, smallest one. There are two different styles you can buy, with an applicator or without. Personally I use OB which does not have an applicator and I find I can position it better using my finger. It is personal preference as to which kind to use. Anyway, here's how to insert a tampon.
Step 1. Wash your hands
Step 2. Place the rounded end of the tampon or applicator against the opening to your vagina (I find sitting on the toilet with legs wide apart the best position)
Step 3. With your free hand, gently hold open the skin surrounding the vaginal opening. Slowly ease the tampon or applicator into your vagina.
--if your using an applicator insert until you reach the end of the fatest part of the applicator, once there slowly push the skinny piece into the larger part of the tube, this will push the tampon out of the applicator and into your vagina
--if your using an OB tampon guide the tampon into your vagina using your index finger, ease the tampon into your vagina aiming towards your back.
Step 4. When the tampon is in the right place, you won't feel it. If you do push a little further. Leave the string hanging outside of your body.
Step 5. Wash your hands and your done.
Hope this has helped, good luck

First of all, don't feel bad & don't feel stupid for asking or not being sure or anything like that. I was (am) 20 years old before I finally figured it out for myself. It isn't that bad but I prefer pads. I only use tampons when I wanna go swimming or something. There is a good website for directions for that & most tampon packages have instructions as well. The website is www.beinggirl.com. They have lots of information about things like these & they also give out samples of tampons & pads. If I were to give you my own way of doing it, here it is: Buy a regular absorbency tampon because they are smaller & better to start with. There are some packages that say they are great for beginners as well. The kind I use are Playtex Gentle Glide. You're right, it can hurt to put them in, so I suggest using lube. I put a bit of jelly lubricant on the end of mine to ease it in better. Sit on the toilet, spread your legs, hold your tampon the way the instructions will say with your tampon purchase or on that website, direct the end that goes in towards your hole & gently press til you're sure you have it positioned to go in, then slowly push until your fingers are touching your skin & you can't go any further, then pull the remaining outside part away & your string will be hanging. Don't pull on the string any because when I do it moves it just enough that it bothers me. I wouldn't suggest pulling on it unless you're taking it out at least until you get used to wearing them. You will of course feel it because you're so aware of it. If it actually hurts & you're walking around bowlegged, it probably isn't in far enough or there's some other problem that you're unaware of, example, a piece of your hymen has broken & is hanging in the way. Try it a few times in a row if it just isn't feeling right, but after that, you should probably stop because it will make you sore. I wish you good luck cause I know it's a tricky thing & I hope this information has helped a little.

First, buy a brand which has a plastic applicator, not a cardboard one. That makes things much easier. My favourite brand personally is Tampax compax.
Try to find ones which are designed for lighter days when you're just starting out. Yes, you'll probably have to change it more often, but they're very small so easiest to learn with.
When you're going to put one in, you have to relax. Get into a position where it will be easiest - most people suggest sitting on the toilet with your legs wide apart, or putting one foot on the edge of the bath. Personally, I find the easiest way is to crouch down with my knees wide apart.
Take the tampon in your right hand (assuming you're right handed). Spread the labia with your left hand and gently insert the tampon into the vagina. Push it in gently until the fingers of your right hand are touching the skin. That's the most important part - it has to be far enough in or it will be uncomfortable. If you're having trouble getting it in, try pushing slightly to one side or the other, or slightly rotating the tampon as you push it in. If you find it a bit dry going in, you could try using a bit of vaseline on the tip of the tampon.
Once the fingers of your right hand are touching the skin, use your left hand to push the applicator in all the way, as far as it goes - again, if you feel a bit of resistance try pushing slightly to one side or the other, then withdraw the applicator and the tampon should be in place.
If the tampon is in the right place, you won't be able to feel it inside you at all. It's difficult to get the hang of at first, but just keep trying, I promise you it's worth it!!! No more messy pads, no more gushing of blood when you sneeze or move position.......tampons are definitely the way to go!!! Good luck!

Well some girls have trouble when in their first year of getting their period. My friend, shes 18 and got her period when she was 14, and she still can't get one in. Well, theres a diagram on the package and well, i suggest the ones with the plastic applicator first. Get your right size (probably a regular, but if ur a heavier flow then go the next size up or just change it more often) I also suggest Tampax Peral, Platex Beyond, or Platex gentle glide. These are all "user friendly" tampons when your first start putting one in. There are diagrams on the box how to do it, and you can ask your mom how to do it too. But here a video that shows it (no porn just annimated).

Good Luck!
P.s Sometimes it's hard to get one in it took my mom 3 boxes and myself 2. So, just keep trying every month until you get it. Also, if you do it during your period it'l be easier to get in because it'l probably just glide right in cause its wet ( i know it sounds gross) where if you wern't having ur period, its drier.
P.s.s (lol, sorry i just have too much to say) If it hurts when you put it in, most likely its in wrong or its not up far enough.
Why you might not get it in: Your vagina is still too small, and your young yet!

It won't hurt. There should be an insert that has directions and pictures to go along with it. Read the directions carefuly, then do it. If you can feel the tampon inside of you, it is not up far enough. I suggest you use the ones with the plastic applicator for your first time. I think they are easier to use.

My mom had to put my tampon in for me the first time because we were going white water rafting and i needed a tampon... but just try out different brands and sizes. Because it's your first time using one, you'll probably want the slender or the smallest ones you can find. Make sure you change your tampon regularly though, you don't wanna have it in too long and get Toxic Shock Syndrome. If it doesn't go in very easy, use some vasaline and a mirror to help you "navigate" down there...If you have more questions I'm sure you're mom can always help you...Good luck and welcome to womanhood!!!

Your vagina should be able to stretch to accomodate the tampon. You might want to sit down when trying to insert it. Just relax and follow the directions. If it feels uncomfortable with it in then you have put it in wrong and need to try again. Practice makes perfect. Good luck.

DEFINATELY USE A PLASTIC APPLICATOR.
That's my best advice.
Maybe you could also look in a mirror, & see exactly what you're doing.
1. Pull on the string to make sure it's not loose.
2. Put your leg up on a counter/toilet seat.
3. Slide the applicator halfway in.
4. Now, push the 2 pieces of the applicator together.
You shouldn't feel any pain, but if you do, try again.
Practice makes perfect.
=)
PS. I personally like the Kotex ones.
