I have already started training for the navy, but i havent actually enlisted yet. The main reason why i am joining is to leave home, and to have my college paid for. I thought that the navy was what I wanted until my aunt offered to let me live in her HUGE house for free, while i attend MSU, which is like 5 min from her house. She is also very young, and has a baby, and i love kids. The only problem with this is thati still dont have the money to pay for college, and my grades are good, but not good enough to get scholarships from. I cant get federal aid b/c my parents make too much money, even though they arent helping me pay for school. This decision is life-changing, so i need to carefully look at all my options, but i really dont know what they are. What would u do?

First off, don't enlist in the military as a way to pay for college unless you are interested in being in the military. It isn't just a job...it is truly an adventure and a very distinct way of life. Once you sign the paper...they own you. Also note, there is a war going on.
You are still eligible for student loans. Try it for a year. Get the loans to pay for school for a year and get a part time job to keep cash flowing.

If i were u I would put some more time into researching scholarships.. There are thousands of private scholarships available,e to kids just like u. Most you wont hear about from your guidance counselor but if u start digging and really get yourself out there I know u can find one.. The govt even has billions set aside for scholarships and other programs but u have to research them and apply on your own not through the school... Also start looking to local businesses for some help. Understand that when a business makes money it gets taxed a large part of that money by the govt. It is a much better deal for businesses to give grants and scholarships out to people in your situation, then it is to pay the tax... Seriously check into it, but u must WORK at finding them.. Also consider this... The navy will pay for your school when u get out, right? But how much? Enough to actually cover the cost of your total schooling... I don't think so! Also by the time u get out u will be much older... Your life will be way different and more then likely u will be in need of more funds for life as well as school, and the military wont cover that. Will u have a spouse by then? Maybe a kid as well... Trust me.. Start asking anyone and everybody for some help with school and go live with your aunt and enjoy life the way it is meant to be.... Peace out.

I joined the Navy and they have great schools. Trust me life goes by fast, so stay in the Navy and you can retire at 37 or 38 years old. Trust me again 37 or 38 is not old. You can retire from the Navy get a pension and get a job working on the outside doing what you did in the Navy. The best part is you will have a check coming every month from the Navy, plus the check from where you are working. Think about it. Living with your aunt won't work. You will also have insurance for life.

I would take my aunt up on her offer. Getting an education is wonderful and important. I would check into the the university ROTC program, because the ROTC program typically offers financial aide and scholarships, which would help you out with tuition. Also, I would keep check into a campus job, and until i got other forms of aid (like the ROTC scholarships, departmental scholarships) look into student loans. Plus, when you graduate, you will enter the Navy as an officer, you have a job, you can use your degree, plus, at that time, the Navy will help you persue any other educational goals you may have.

You could join the Navy for the minimum enlistment possible that provides money for college, GI Bill plus College Fund.
Have you considered applying for an ROTC scholarship?
You definitely need to do some research! Ask your librarian to help you.
I recommend meditation on our own to ask yourself what you really want. Where do you want to be in five years? In ten years? How can you accomplish your goals?
When you've decided, go for it.
Just remember this if you decide to enlist, "Choose your rate, choose your fate!" That means that some jobs in the Navy are better for quality of life and for promotion than others. Select a job that suits your temperament and suits your future goals.

Talk to your Aunt, let her know why you wanted to go into the navy & why you don't. She might come up with some good answers. Also if you are over the age & non't live with your parents you could get help with school.

Without knowing more of your situation it would be really difficult to say what I'd do, but here goes, maybe you need to talk to your parents about getting a loan from them.
