yes American cars do have speed governors. now high of a seed they are i couldn't tell you and i don't really care because the highest legal speed in the US is 70mph so your never going to get your car that fast on a pubic road unless your being stupid.

Basically most american cars have speed limiters in them to save the engine from high revolutions (extended over say 4,000 RPM) and as others said, for the speed ratings of the factory equipped times...

Most vehicles limit out at about 170-180km/h

The Crown Victoria police interceptor is limited at 225km/h

Vehicles like the Corvette are higher of course and is just to save the engine at redline, like most exotic sports cars

yes they do have governers mostly due to the speed ratings on the tires. for example, if the manufacturer lets you go 120 mph on a factory tire rated to 110 mph then you could sue them. the fastest us speed limit is 75 and is very common where i live. there are programmers that can remove the limiters however.

Speed Governors are not mandatory for domestic cars in most of the countires. The Road and transport authorities in most of the countries insist speedlimiter usage only for trucks, schoolbuses etc. It is advisable to fit a speedlimiter in your car for your own safety, road safety as well as for fuel savings and increased vehicle life. This helps to reduce the total no: of fatal accidents as well.

My Mercury 2004 Marauder is electronically governed at 120 MPH. I know for certain that big boy can do well over that though.

I couldn't have said it better than 70xbody already has. Any vehicle when BRAND NEW, will have it's speed limited to what the tires that come with the vehicle will allow.
