I wanted to defragment my C drive today, and i haven't done it before. I've only used the defragment feature for removable disks, and that usually works smoothly for me.
Then it said there were error and i needed to skandisk and repair problems, then try to defragment it again.
I used scandisk, and it restarted 10 times, said there were programs running that were writting on C drive and i needed to stop those programs. what programs? How would I go about stopping these programs for the time that i'm doing this? I didn't have any open windows, and everything was off my toolbar because explorer caused an error and shutdown when i was trying to defragment the first time. all i had on my toolbar was the time. what should i do now? i restarted and the computer is running the same as usual now, but i'd still like to clean up my C drive.

No problem about the typos. Everybody makes misteaks!
Obviously, you are using Windows 95, 98 or ME.
First, use Disk Cleanup to delete any and all unnecessary files. You might take this time to uninstall totally useless and unused programs.
Try to reboot into Safe Mode. This minimizes the activities, so that you can do a ScanDisk. Yes, it will restart many times, but picks up again where it left off, so eventually it will finish. It's just too bad that it makes you hit a button to get it to continue after every ten restart. This could take ALL DAY and Night.
Once you finish the ScanDisk, then try the Defrag again.
If you have another computer, you can put this hard drive into another computer. The scandisk will run much faster as a slave drive, then it would as the primary drive. This might work if you can BOOT up into MS-DOS and run CHKDSK. Use the form: CHKDSK /F where the /F will fix problems.

Do not reformat unless you have either a full system restote disk with you windows platform on it, or the original windows set up disk. When you format, everything is cleaned off you cpu.
When the box telling you scan disk has restarted 10 times, there is a check box where you can shut off that warning and let the scan disk continue doing its thing. That worked for me.
I f this does not work, you may have anti virus or anti spy working in the background. You will have to de activate them to run scan disk & then defrag. In both cases , I would do the full scandisk and not the short version.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

hi, Defrag does artwork as long as there's a ought to accomplish it - examine the defrag diagnosis too see. Ity will speeed issues up slightly (dependant on how fragmented your force is!) yet not something drastic. I even have alswatys discovered that each and every 18 - 24 months this is great to reload your laptop/laptop with a sparkling setting up of domicile windows because it only gets slowed down. additionally try working some thing like Spybot or Adaware to verify secret agent ware isn't slowing device. Defrag takes as long as your force is in length... i understand my 80GB force takes a stable few hours - start up it wehen you get in from artwork and it would be achieved for bedtime... or in case you experience ok approximately it start up formerly artwork and it would be achieved once you treturn. cheers

Reboot your PC, and when it's coming up press F8 key to get a menu of boot options. Choose "command line only", type:
> scandisk c: /autofix
and let it go.
When it finishes, reboot, and go into Windows.
Open a command prompt and type:
> defrag c: -v
and let it go. That will defrag your drive C: in "verbose" mode so you can see the before and after results.
Good luck.

Right click on your toolbar, go to Task Manager, the click on the "processes" tab, at the bottom of the task manager window it should say how many processes are running (like processes:30). How many do you have running?
