what physical property of iron might provide a unique way to separate it from a mixture?

Density. In most liquids it will sink to the bottom. In powder or graniuated mixtures it could be sorted by magnetism, providing none of the other things in the mixture were magnetic as well.

It's magnetic - if it is mixed with non-magnetic material, a magnet will separate it.
