What engine does it have in it? If it's the 5.4L V8 or 6.8L V10 it takes a Motorcraft Oil Filter FL-820-S and 6.5 liters of 5W30. If it's equipped with the 7.3L DIT V8, it takes a Motorcraft Oil Filter FL-1995 and 15 liters of 15W40. Size of wrench needed for the drain plug on the gasoline engines is a 16mm or 5/8. And for the diesel engine it's a 19mm or 3/4. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Note: 2001 is the first year Ford switched to using 5W20 engine oil in all their gasoline engines with the exception of the 4.0L SOHC engine which still uses 5W30. My mother's 2001 Toyota Corolla takes 4 quarts of engine oil, so it's pretty safe to say that your Excursion would take more than that amount.

Powerstroke is 15 quarts with filter change...

On the powerstroke it is critical it gets the 15 quarts as the engine oil runs the injectors that fire the motor and being 2 quarts low can cause the engine to run like crud...
