I have one six inch duct that runs to my family room. There is only on register in that room and I want to add another inline before the existing box. I'm adding a 6"x4" register box. What type of connector should I use to tap into the 6" duct? Does it matter if I use a saddle or a 'Y'?

I should add tha the reason I want to do this is because there is only one vent in the room and my dog sits on it, blocking heat/AC that comes out. It's plenty to heat/cool the room, but not when she's on it.

if you can get back to the main duct and the ceiling in the basement is open run a 5 inch duct to the new spot in the floor... dont forget to use a straight or angle boot to keep the duct work between the joists...

hope this helps..

A "Y" would probably be less air flow restriction than a saddle.
