He said microscopic; not unicellular. Think people. Go to rotifer, perhaps, bdeloid rotifer, to find information. About 1000 cells. Any thing seen with a microscope is microscopic. micro; meaning a millionth of a meter!! I can not believe that people can not get this, regardless of claim of credential. A rotifer is microscopic and has about 1000 cells.

Answering the question as you have written it, the answer is One. Bacteria and so on. They are the smallest microscopic organisms. You probably meant smallest multicellular organism. In that case I would go with hyphae i think its called. Small green plant like organism. Lives in the sea. Only has around 100 cells.

the smallest living organisms are uni cellular-have one cell-like amoebas and paramecium. some organisms like viruses, which don't really even have a full cellular structure push the question of what exactly is a living organism?
