Here are some reasons why cobalt is important, that you could google.
It's a trace element for animal and plant nutrition. Vitamin B12, cyanocobalamin, is a complicated molecule, called a porphyrin, with a cobalt atom at the centre.
Cobalt is one of the three elements in the periodic table which is ferromagnetic. Several highly magnetic alloys contain cobalt.
Several high-performance steels contain cobalt.
Cobalt is a strategic mineral because of the importance of its alloys in defence.
A neutron bomb, that is, a fission bomb that produces a huge number of neutrons with a fairly small fission explosion, so it kills everybody but causes minimum property damage god forbid, contains cobalt.
Cobalt salts are dark blue in colour and are used in pottery glaze.
Only a few countries have large deposits of cobalt ores.
