My mare is pregnant and is due in December. How long after she has her colt should I wait to start riding her again?

This is a decision for you to make. I would give her about another month or so before you start taking her out on really really long rides, especially since the baby will need to be by her side every second.

However, if you want to start riding her immeadiately, there is a simple solution if your concern is separating her from her baby.

Since the baby will be halter trained within the first week or two, you can start bringing him with on a lead when you ride. This will not only make both mother and baby more at east, but it will also make it alot easier when it comes time to train him, and it will also make him a ton more socialable.

I barebacked my mare with light walking and troting 2 weeks after my colt was born.

I started to saddle ride her about 2 months after. Light troting and loping.

I started to work her more at the trot and fast lope roughly at 6 months. That is when I started to pony my colt (now 6 year old gelding) on the trail etc.

I had to give her time to condition herself and not give her a lot of stress.

you can ride her when the foal is about 2 months old because you don't want to stress her out specially after she gave birth. but you should not be thinking about this right now you should be enjoying the foal and mom. when you have the vet out for the foal in about 1-2 months to check her you can ask your vet about the riding and when you can start again.

I rode my mare up to the day before her babies were born. We were in the local saddle club and she was so pregnant the club had to come to my arena to do practice. I rode her probly 7 days after her babies were born out on the trails a few times for exercise. It was awsome she had 2 babies for me before I had to sell her {:O( I miss her and still love her forever. You are so blessed to have your horses! Good luck!

That is a decision you're going to have to make with the
vet. It depends on how the rest of her pregnancy goes and the delivery. Not something you should be thinking of right now.
