Well that depends on the horse. One who is calm and could care less whats going on around it, and one who at the same time is easy to rein, because your child is learning to ride and the horse needs to know his neck rein so that the child will learn how to ride properly. Now horses and ponies can be the same in attitude it just depends on the horse. I bought my kids their first pony they called him buckwheat, he looked like a quarter horse and rode like one too. Take your time looking around for the right one, it could mean the safely of your child if you rush into buying one right away. Id say find someone with a gelding for sale and have the owner ride it first to show you how it reins then ride it yourself to try it out and then if you feel it safe enough put your child on it to see how it feels to him/her. Use your own better judgment and trust what you know of horses to buy one for your child. GOOD LUCK.

Any horse that's small (not a pony) maybe 14 1/2 to 15 hands high, well trained and bomb proof should do it.

A bombproof pony
Mixed breed, Welsh, Connemara(if you can find one ;D) or a Quarter Pony. Shetlands can tend to be stubborn, but they can teach kids a lot.

that depends on how much riding experience and height your child has. Personally I would recommend a Welsh Pony.
