Because sometimes things seem so hopeless that no "normal" person can fix it - the problem is greater than any "mere mortal". It's the stuff of comic books and also for many, the basis of faith in religion.

It represents the hope, that no matter how bad things get, there is some greater force that can still get it back on track and save the day.

GET READY...HERE'S THE REAL ANSWER!

...because if they were reachable we wouldn't revere them (as much).

No matter what you achieve you'll never be truly satisfied because you did it!...if you did it then why were you not able to do more?

I mean, gee...if you did it then how hard could it be!...anyone else could do it if I did, therefore it's really not a big deal.

So...humans invented god figures to represent a mythical level of achivement. Human can't do what gods can...so all I can do it aspire with humility.

God is the greatest invention...not the wheel or stuffed crust pizza.

Yes, because if we could `reach` our hero, we would find him to be flesh and blood like the rest of us, full of bad habits, and non heroic vices. We would then be disappointed and would feel let down.

Because if you could reach them and touch them you would find out that they were flawed and had feet of clay.....by being unreachable our preconceived ideas of them remain intact and we can continue to "dream" about emulating them.....I mean who wants to get close enough to Brad Pitt (for instance) only to find out that he leaves streaks of gold on his underpants too like the rest of us. Who wants to find out that the Queen doesn't have a velvet covered padded toilet with automatic bum wiper. I know I don't....I'd rather carry their images untainted in my imagination.

Not all of us need a hero, but hope is probably a key word in your research.
