When writing about an artist, how do you properly state their year of birth and death?

Something like this?
(b. 1728-1799)
Any difference if the artist is living or deceased?

Answer 1

If they are deceased, (b.1728-d.1799) or simply (1728-1799).

If they are still living, (b. 1932)

Answer 2

you can just say (1728-1799) and if they haven't died yet just say (1728- )

that is what i read in all my art history texts...
