A long vowel says it's name. A short vowel does not say it's name.
Example:
Long Vowel.... came game famous in all the previous words a says it's name therefore it is long
Short Vowel.... cat lack fact in all the previous words a does not say it's name
GOOD LUCK

if the enunciation is shorter it's a short vowel
if longer enunciation then it's the opposite

the second answerer gave a good example, the first one is wrong and rude.

there is a. you know how it makes the A and aaahhhhhhhhhhh sound? aahhhhhhh is short.

Were you not able to figure that out by my example?

U and Uuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh? uuuuuuuuhhhhhhh is short. No duh! Whatever sound the vowel makes that does not sound like the letter itself is short.

In American English, the short vowels are:

A in "cat" (as compared to the long A sound in "late")
E in "dead" (as compared to the long E sound in "deed")
I in "sit" (as compared to the long I sound in "lie")
O in "stop" (as compared to the long O sound in "soap")
U in "cup" (as compared to the long U sound in "soup")
