I started my period in January of 06 (New years) It was irregular, then regular (for the most part) then the flow was very light for 2 or 3 cycles. I've been wanted to use tampons and have them ready to try, but since my flow is so light i can't. and i don't want to use pads b/c i'm in highschool and people will see me with it. is there a reason why my flow got light? and if my sister had really irregular periods will i have them too? any other advice for tampons/periods is also apreciated! thanks

I dont blame you babe tampons are way better than pads, with tampons you cant even tell ur having your period. It doesnt matter that your flow is light, there are tampons labeled "light" for people like you. If your sister had irregular periods you probabaly will too, but EVERYONE has irregular per. the first 2 years. Be careful when putting a tampon in, if you dont do it right it will be uncomfortable. hope i helped! good luck babe!

Sometimes periods take a couple years to become regular. I wouldn't worry about the period becoming lighter and your sisters flow does not reflect what your periods will be like. Unfortunately your right about the not wearing tampons. Wearing pads is not such a bad thing. You may feel like people can see them, but they can't. There are some really thin pads that absorb a lot. To be honest, I am 26 years old and have never worn a tampon in my life. I prefer pads because I think that we are naturally supposed to bleed out. Anyway, I wont go into all the other reasons I believe girls should wear pads because I am not trying to push my beliefs on you. I do want you to know however that there are plenty of optioins in pads.

Your periods will be irregular or generally not-as-the-norm for you for a few years, until your body is finished developing physically and sexually your cycles will continue to be effected – your reproductive organs are a little like a factory, when it first opens up not all the machines work together or at the same speed but as it carries on everything starts working together in synchronisation.

Hormonal birth control does NOT regulate your menstrual cycles.
Hormonal birth control suppresses your menstrual cycles, and as such it would cover up any problems you may have with your reproductive health. Suppressing your menstrual cycles would also mean you would not longer be able to learn from them what is or is not normal for your body; this can effect how you care for your sexual/vaginal/menstrual/reproductive health.

You can help things along by taking black cohosh or evening primrose oil in capsule form on a daily basis, these can both help regulate hormones, however when it comes down to it your body knows best half the time and will sort itself out in the end, until then it is a case of dealing with it the best you can. Your mothers or sisters menstrual cycle can be a sign of how yours will be, however don't take that as being set in stone, it may well be that there are problems that they have that you could find a solution to from learning about your cycles and researching the problem.

It may not be best to use tampons, however pads aren't the only other choice, there are over twenty different menstrual options, if you want to use something internal then you may want to try menstrual cups or softcups as they can be used on light flow, and even before you have your period, they are more convenient, cheaper and greener than tampons but most importantly they are a lot more hygienic and healthier than tampons.

There is nothing wrong with using pads, whether you are in high school or not has nothing to do with it, pads are just another form of menstrual protection, they do not make you seem younger or immature, and you would be mature to care for your health.

As a side note to correct above answers – tampons do not increase your risk of STD's however they do significantly increase your risk of toxic shock syndrome and vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis because tampons prevent your vagina from keeping itself clean, cause vaginal splitting, give bacteria a pores environment to multiply upon, and in the case of commercial tampons also introduce chemicals into your vagina.

If you have emotional stress / weak diet it´s natural to have a light flow. You should definitely do a check up with a doctor, blood and urine analyses - maybe start the new generation pill to balance your organism. It´s a new cycle and it´s good to know yourself and trust everything is alright with your body :) but Im sure everything is normal. You cannot compare yourself to anyone else - even if it´s family. Some years ago I was anemic and during that time I never had the period. One last thing, I don´t really advice tampons unless absolutely necessary (swimming etc), my doctor always prevented me against it. There are a lot of options in the market now - smaller pads you dont even notice. Or you can buy more thick cotton panties to absorb if it´s just a short flow a day. Good luck.

your cycle can be similar to those of your family members, so if irregularity is common in your family, it is a likely trend for you too. If you want to have a steady period, start taking birth control. you will know when it is going to happen, and the flow will be fairly regular each time. There are tampons on the market now for extremely light flow, just make sure you still change it regularly. Don't feel embarrased about carrying pads at school, I did it for four years and nobody ever saw or said anything!

If you want to use tampons then go ahead, what's stopping you, you can get small ones. And they can be used even with a light flow. Your periods will be erratic for the first year or so, every one is different. I never wore pads, especially at high school, I thought they made me smell 'not so fresh' down there. As I said every one is different, just because your sister has irregular periods does not mean the same for you. Remember if you can go for 100% cotton, even better do for the certified organic kind.
Fact: Regular tampons contain asbestos.

If you feel that your periods are problem, then you need to go to a doctor for answers. But, on the tampon thing -- they do make light day tampons. You don't have to be flowing heavy or regular just to wear a tampon. You can wear a tampon at any time -- just be sure and change it once a day.

Tampons do not increase your chance of getting sexual transmitted diseases (STD) -- only having unsafe sex makes that possible.
Tampons are safe to use without scratching your insides -- just be gentle and you do just fine.

Your periods can take up to two years to regulate, they make really thin pads now because like you said, you can't use tampons for light periods, usually your menstrual cycle patters are hereditary from your mother, also if you are very athletic that can have an affect on your period, it may cause it to be very light, or you might not have one at all

no, you will not nesscerly have irregualr periods just because your sister does. everyone is different. even family. and some people have bodies built that have light periods. it probally is a good idea to not wear tampons if you have a light period because it can scratch your inside if its too dry. and the high school problem: carry a purse! plus its not like your the only girl that has a period so people will understand if they find out. dont worry! =]

Sweetheart, you have just reached Menarche. Initial periods will be erratic and with unpredictable flow. Give it sometime.
