Compaq and HP computers still have their own identity under the same corporate umbrella. It is not much different than buying a Ford or Mercury... or a Chevy or Pontiac... While there are some common parts, the individual models have their identity.

It looking like HP is maintaining Compaq rather than changing it into HP.

The thing that makes all the OEM brands (well, almost. IBM is an exception) the same is that they make everything onboard. Compaq's claim to fame was in the 90's when they had innovative features like built-in system RAM.

Nowadays, they don't have anything that separates them from each other.

it's branded as Compaq (some products were rebranded HP) but they're manufactured by HP

Its basically the same thing, same parts and same service. The only difference is the brands, but since the merger a few years ago the brands are basically the same. They are basically worthless.
