Isn't it the middle number. Mean is the average and

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 wouldn't 5 be the median?

The word "median" has several different meanings in mathematics all related to the "middle" of mathematical objects.

The statistical median is an order statistic that gives the "middle" value of a sample. More specifically, it is the value such that an equal number of samples are less than and greater than the value (for an odd sample size), or the average of the two central values (for an even sample size). The Mathematica command Median[list] can be used to find the statistical median of the elements in a list.

A triangle median is the Cevian from one of its vertices to the midpoint of the opposite side. The medians intersect in a point known as the triangle centroid that is sometimes also called the median point.

Similarly, a tetrahedron median is a line joining a vertex of a tetrahedron to the geometric centroid of the opposite face.

The median is the middle number in a set of numbers. For example, if your numbers (in order) are 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, then (since 4 is in the middle), 4 is your median! Hope I helped you!! :)

It is the middle number of a series of numbers.

3 4 5 6 7 7 8 9

6 is the median since it is the middle number.

Again?

1, 2, 3 ,4 ,5 ,6, 7

The number in the middle is four.

IF you have a set of data like this:

1, 2 ,3 ,4

Then you add the two middle numbers (2 and 3) and divide by 2.

2 + 3= 5 and 5 divided by 2 is 2r.1

Ha okay you asked "What is mean, omg I forgot!"... Just put it all under one question next time.

Median is the middle number.

1, 3, 5, 6, 7

The median (middle number) would be 5.

It's the value which divides your ordered set into two sets of equal number of members.

For example, if you had the set of all integers from 0 to 10, your median would be 5, because half the members of that set (0,1,2,3,4) are below 5 and half (6,7,8,9,10) are above. (Well, not exactly "half"; it's more accurately half minus one for odd-numbered sets.)

If you have a set with an even number of elements, take the middle two values then average them to get your median. Thus, for the set of all integers 1-10, your median would be 5.5. (Since 5 and 6 are your two middle values; you can't have one middle value in a set with an even number of elements.)

Hope that helps!

EDITED TO ADD: xtcwmeg said this much better than I did, in a fewer number of words. Kudos to him/her! :-)
