It can create an earthquake like effect. However, underground test don't create fallout, like air test do. Normally when a nuclear bomb is detonated, it blast particles, dirt, debris and other things into the air and they end up spreading and landing on areas miles away. These debris are radioactive, this is called fallout, and can contaminate anything that it touches or comes near. So setting off a bomb underground is safer than doing it above ground.

Actually the most devastating nuclear blasts are those that occur just above ground level. And (hopefully) those people doing underground test (which the U.S. did a lot of in the 50's) would be smart enough not to do it too near any fault lines?!

Well, if you think about it...whats the difference in a nuclear bomb test and a nuclear reactor to create energy? I think as long as the container holding the explosion is secure then it doesnt matter if you do it above ground or below it

Yes, it is. Despite the risks, every country has detonated huge bombs. Im surprised we are not growing mutants already, with the amount of 'tests' that have been done. At least the country is usually rich enough to minimize the affects, not like this time...

No if done properly. However when India carried out its nuclear tests and also for Israel, it was not done so meticulously, radiation leaked out. On the other hand Pakistan carried out its tests in the moutains turning thme into gold (The most majestic) and no radiation leaked.

I heard that if one more was dropped the world would blow up. eek.

It's safer than doing them above ground, especially if you have to test them inside your own country.
