I can't imagine any other way of pronouncing it besides "crap plus a 'y'" Do you have another way of saying it?

That fish btw is a "crappie" but it is still pronounced the same way as the bad crappy. At least I think so - don't you?

Do you have the same worry about funny (fun+y) or runny (run+y)? or gummy (gum+y)? They all follow the same rule so I would think if there's a new way to say crappy then you might also need a new way to say them.

I have to add that in the US the blue gilled sunfish that is found in a lot of lakes that kids go fishing in is called a "crappie". It is popular because it is easy to catch which is a plus when kids are taken fishing. It also, around here anyway, is sounded like crappy. If they were going to sound it as croppy around here they would have spelled it like that, at least around here. I guess it is a regional difference in pronunciation. (Don't forget that around here we pronounce Worcester as "W'ster" so there are differences.)

This has been a subject of some research by myself of late. I googled it and polled fishermen and according to the best sources I could find, the correct pronunciation is "Croppy"

I know, not earth-shaking, but sometimes ya just gotta know, ya know?

black crappie by hugh t.

Some fishes are sullen and snappy;
And others, one has to call sappy.
The black crappie, a sunfish,
Is really a fun fish:
Not black in mood — more happy-crappie.

The black crappie is a silvery, black-mottled sunfish (Eastern US). However:

I'd written a limerick snappy:
It was rhyming black crappie with sappy;
Since one should pronounce crappie
As rhyming with poppy,
The fate of my verse was unhappy.

In "a crappy day" , crappy rhymes with pappy or happy

The fish rhymes with poppy, sloppy, floppy, croppy(Irish word for somebody with very short hair)
